Around 100 students learn robotics, take part in First Lego League in Kelowna

17 teams from around the Okanagan participated

It was a fun and exciting day for around 100 students who participated in the First Lego League regional qualifying tournament.

Around 100 students from around the Okanagan, and even a team of two who came all the way from Nelson, aged 9 to 16 competed in the event in which they got to show off their applied research and Lego robotic designs that they've worked on and programmed for weeks.

The Saturday, Feb. 8 event marked the first time Kelowna has hosted the qualifying tournament, which took place at UBC Okanagan91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s Engineering, Education, and Management Building.

As the games went on, the 17 teams got to show off their custom robots, put their skills to the test, having to make adjustments in real-time, work as a team, learn from UBCO students, and present in front of a team of judges.

The theme of this year's competition was 'submerged' as their robots were to explore technologies in relation to layers and depths of the ocean on the way to understanding sustainability in the future. In total, teams from 80 countries around the work are taking part in the challenge.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœWe are grateful to our staff and community partners UBC Okanagan for co-creating learning opportunities that show students the impact they can have on our world through discovery and togetherness," said Central Okanagan Public Schools superintendent and CEO Kevin Kaardal.
