PHOTOS: Thousands attend '80s-themed Vernon Winter Carnival Parade

Bright colours and '80s nostalgia highlighted the 64th annual Winter Carnival Parade in Vernon Saturday

From larger-than-life Rubik's Cubes to giant boom boxes, classic movies and plenty of colourful jumpsuits, the '80s were well represented at the 64th annual Vernon Winter Carnival parade Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8.

Taking place on the second day of Winter Carnival, the parade set off on a new route this year, taking a straight shot down 27th Street from 45th Avenue to 32nd Avenue.

It was a wintry day for the festivities with light snow falling Saturday morning, but giving way to beautiful clear skies just in time for the parade.

This year's Winter Carnival theme is Back to the '80s, and the parade paid homage to the decade in spades.

Among the organizations and businesses that took part in the parade were Sundance Martial Arts, Horse Drawn Okanagan, North Okanagan Minor Lacrosse, Vernon Search and Rescue, the Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society, Vernon Ringette, Vernon Pride, the North Okanagan Hospice Society, the Girl Guides, Sadok Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Stutters Restoration, Vernon BMX, She Shed Vernon and many more.

Thousands of people came out to watch the parade, including many kids who were filling their bags with candy.

The parade kicked off with Interior Running Association's one-miler road race, which featured none other than Vernon ultra athlete Shanda Hill. The runners were the first sight for parade-goers as they raced to the finish line.

The 65th annual Vernon Winter Carnival is just getting started, with over 100 events on the schedule until the Carnival ends on Feb. 16.

Up at SilverStar Mountain Resort, the Retro Rink Boogie is taking place from 5-8 p.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, the JCI Rock Stars Bonspiel curling tournament is wrapping up at the Vernon curling club at 7 p.m. At Predator Ridge an adult event, the Parka Party, is taking place at the Range Restaurant from 6:30-11 p.m.
