After intense planning on how to respond to tariffs from the United States, Canada has been given a bit of time to catch its breath.

Just a day before his tariffs were due to take effect, on Feb. 3, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the tariffs would be paused for 30 days.`

In response, Canada91裸聊视频檚 federal government and provincial governments have put a hold on some of their planned retaliatory countermeasures.

The proposed U.S. tariffs would have imposed a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. Canadian energy, including oil and gas, was to have a lower tariff of 10 per cent.

While these tariffs have been postponed, a 10 per cent U.S. tariff on goods from China has taken effect.

The reprieve should not be seen as an end to Trump91裸聊视频檚 tariff threat.

Since he was elected in November, the U.S. president has repeatedly floated the idea of using tariffs against Canada. More recently, he has stated that the U.S. does not depend on its trade relationship with Canada.

91裸聊视频淲e don't need them to make our cars, we make a lot of them, we don't need their lumber because we have our own forests... we don't need their oil and gas, we have more than anybody,91裸聊视频 Trump told global leaders of a World Economic Forum in late January.

Information from the U.S. Census Bureau, tells a different story. Canada is the U.S.91裸聊视频檚 second-largest trading partner, making up 13.8 per cent of all U.S. trade. Anything affecting this relationship would have huge repercussions in the U.S. Some individual states had up to 86 per cent of their trade with Canada.

Still, the language used in Trump91裸聊视频檚 recent address to the World Economic Forum, as well as the tone of other comments he has made, show that tariffs are still a possibility. His recent statements have signalled a dramatic change in the relationship between the U.S. and Canada.

During this 30-day reprieve, it is important for Canada91裸聊视频檚 federal and provincial governments to make preparations to cope with a potential tariff war.

Some Canadians have started to make their own preparations. The B.C. provincial government is keeping to its plan to invest $10 billion in local industries and businesses to make them less reliant on the U.S.

Even if Trump were to reverse his position on tariffs against Canada permanently, the relationship between the two countries will no longer be what it once was.
