Following a two-vehicle crash in Vernon that led to a hospitalization on Thursday, a petition has been launched calling for a traffic light to be installed at what its creator describes as a dangerous intersection.
The crash took place between a truck and a car at Pottery Road and Highway 6 around 4:30 p.m. Feb. 6. BC Emergency Health Services told The Morning Star that paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one person in the crash.
The person was transported to hospital in stable condition, according to paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.
The crash has prompted an by Fraser Young. Launched on Friday, the petition says this is far from the first serious accident to occur at the intersection.
"Our community, the residents of Vernon Lumby constituency, is persistently disturbed by the growing number of serious motor incidents taking place at the intersection of Hwy 6 and Pottery Road," the petition states. "Our personal concern has elevated to the point of fear, as our daily scan through social media is littered with disturbing reports of accidents in this area. It has become evident that immediate measures need to be taken to curb these alarming occurrences."
The petition calls on the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and Vernon-Lumby MLA Harwinder Sandhu to work towards installing a traffic light at the intersection, complete with sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrians.
"The consequences of this neglect have proven to be too grave, as apparent in the numerous accidents that this intersection has witnessed," the petition states. "Reducing the risk of motor accidents is a crucial step in enhancing road safety, therefore this installation will indubitably save lives."
The petition has garnered 88 signatures as of Saturday morning.
A traffic light already exists on Highway 6 at Kalamalka Lake Road, just 350 metres from the Pottery Road intersection.
The Morning Star has reached out to the Ministry of Transportation and MLA Sandhu for comment.
