Central Okanagan transit users are being asked to participate in a fare review for the Kelowna Regional Transit System (KRTS).

A BC Transit media release says the process will assess existing fares and products to ensure they balance affordability, ridership growth, and cost recovery (the percentage of transit operating expenses which are covered by passenger fares).

Fare reviews are typically undertaken every three to five years. However, the most recent planned review was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the last one was completed in 2015. Since then, demand for transit and the cost of operation has continued to increase, the release states.

Transit users are invited to regarding changes being considered for fixed-route and custom transit in the KRTS.

Funding to maintain and expand transit service comes from the province, local governments (property taxes), fare revenue, and advertising.
