Lavington Park in Coldstream looked straight out of Back to the Future on Sunday afternoon, as dozens of eager road runners donned vintage attire for an energetic running race.
The Starting Block's Endurance Health and Fitness 10 and three kilometre runs were the kick-off to a week full of Carnival events.
The race was the first organized by Endurance Health and Fitness, after the group took over for Kal Rats.
"It was cold in temperature but warm in smiles and spirits," said organizer Melanie Spooner, as the -10 degree Celsius air was combated by free hot chocolate and heaters for competitors at the finish line.
Coldstream young gun Adam Saunders took home gold in the 10 km race, as he beat out 93 other competitors with a scintillating time of 40 minutes and 23 seconds.
Fourth overall, but the first woman across the line was Kamloops' Lienke Raath, who finished in 41 minutes and 49 seconds.
There are dozens of events scheduled for this week as the 10-day Carnival rounds out, including:
Monday - Jam Can Curling begins. The four-day event is an introduction to curling for Vernon youth, as kids throw frozen milk jugs to targets on the ice at the Centennial Outdoor Rink.
Tuesday - The always-popular bed races, where teams create their own racing machine, and race them around a track set up in the Kal Tire Place North parking lot (12:30 p.m.).
Wednesday - A free speed skating demo takes place. Those interested in trying out the fast-paced sport can head to Kal Tire Place North at 5:30 p.m. Skates are provided, while attendees are encouraged to bring helmet and gloves.
Thursday - Ever wanted the chance to build your own synthesizer? At the Okanagan Regional Library at 3:30 p.m., guests will have the opportunity to construct their own tuneable instrument using electronic components like the 555 timer.
Friday- It's the biggest throwback party of the year. This ticketed dance party at the Vernon Recreation Centre will feature top hits from the 1980s. Cover bands #Poundsign and Groovalicious will be providing the groovy tunes, along with DJ Neko. The party begins at 7 p.m.
