Vernon paddlers held their own in a national paddling tournament held in Penticton.

The Canadian Outrigger Distance Championships took place from Sept. 28-29 in Penticton, where 70 teams, some from as far away as Hawaii, took part.

Competitors took part in a variety of races, including the six-person outrigger canoe, short and long courses, and one and two-person canoe races. Teams raced on a nine-kilometre or 24-kilometre course.

On Saturday, three Vernon teams competed. The open women team on the short course finished ninth overall, but first in their age category with a time of 52:40.6. 

In the mixed open long course, Vernon came in 23rd place, eighth in their age category. The 60+ masters men also competed, finishing sixth overall and tops in their age group with a time of 1:57.10.

On Sunday, the canoe races were run. Vernon's Murray Wood placed 12th overall in the short course race and 58th in the long course. Jeff Innes also competed, finishing 53rd in the long course.
