Top sports stories of 2016: Owls soar to first B.C. boys hoops title

The KSS Owls won the school's first ever B.C. boys 4A basketball title in 2016.

Favoured to win it all from the ²õ±ð²¹²õ´Ç²Ô91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s opening tip-off, the KSS Owls »å¾±»å²Ô91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™t disappoint in 2016.

Considered by many in the provincial basketball community as one of the best teams ever assembled, the Owls claimed the ²õ³¦³ó´Ç´Ç±ô91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s in March at the Langley Events Centre.

KSS, which went 26-0 against provincial opponents in 2015-16, put the icing on the cake with an 87-72 victory over the Tamanawis Wildcats in the gold medal final.

Graduating senior Nav Sandhu said for the Owls, only one outcome in 2016 would have been acceptable.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœF°ù´Ç³¾ the start, we were focused on going all the way, accomplishing one thing, and if we »å¾±»å²Ô91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™t do that, we were going to consider the whole season a ²ú³Ü²õ³Ù,91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ said Sandhu, one of six graduating players on the KSS roster.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœW¾±²Ô²Ô¾±²Ô²µ provincials was really the only thing that mattered and any other wins we had, just saw as part of the legacy.91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ

Tournament MVP Grant Shephard, Parker Simson and Mason Bourcier were all named to the ³Ù´Ç³Ü°ù²Ô²¹³¾±ð²Ô³Ù91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s all-star team, while Simson added the top defensive player award.

As much as pure talent weighed in °­±ð±ô´Ç·É²Ô²¹91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s favour, head coach Harry Parmar said the °¿·É±ô²õ91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™ success at ±è°ù´Ç±¹¾±²Ô³¦¾±²¹±ô²õ91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ”a²õ it did all ²õ±ð²¹²õ´Ç²Ô91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ”c²¹³¾±ð down to hard work and a unified team effort.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœT³ó±ð boys worked really hard on defense and they worked hard all ²â±ð²¹°ù,91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ said Parmar, whose team also won the Interior Savings Western Canada tournament for the second time.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœT³ó±ðy played unselfish basketball, they played for each other and they were rewarded for ¾±³Ù.91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ

For Parmar, who is now in his 1oth season as head coach of the Owls, winning the B.C. title was further validation that the program is headed in the right direction.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵÀá³Ù91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s been a long haul, so it feels good, ¾±³Ù91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s nice to know what ·É±ð91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™r±ð doing here is ·É´Ç°ù°ì¾±²Ô²µ,91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ said Parmar.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœT³ó±ðre91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s a great foundation now at KSS, ·É±ð91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™v±ð added some more wins to the program and I think the future is ²ú°ù¾±²µ³ó³Ù.91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ

Earlier in the season, KSS also in Kelowna for the second straight year.

The Owls defeated the second-ranked Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs 84-71 in front of 2,000 fans at KSS.

91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœT³ó±ð expectations were definitely there and there was some pressure on the boys, but they handled it very ·É±ð±ô±ô,91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ Parmar said.
