Outhouse races, rail jam brings 101 years of carnival fun to life in Revelstoke

Snapshots of the Revelstoke Winter Carnival's Friday night rail jam and Saturday afternoon outhouse races

Revelstoke's Centennial Park came to life Friday night and Saturday afternoon as the 101st winter carnival hosted its popular rail jam and outhouse race events.

Daredevil skiers and snowboarders ground the rails and took to the air on a spotlit track the night of Feb. 14. Then, crowds reconvened at the park midday Feb. 15, for the carnival's most renowned event, the historic outhouse races.

Five-person crews from Home Hardware, Taco Club, Revelstoke Pool and Spa, BC Ambulance Service, Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services and other local service providers powered more than a dozen porta-porties of all shapes and colours down a 100-metre track.

While gridlocked face-offs and potty pushing sent many races speeding to a photo finish, prompting some outhouses to run astray into the crowds and announcers to request tamer competition for the prize-less event, spirits and safety remained high for all in attendance.
