Okanagan team falls in bronze-medal match at national curling event

Vernon-Kamloops team finishes fourth out of 21 teams

The Vernon-Kamloops rink of skip Ava Arndt and second Ivy Jensen of Vernon, and Kamloops sisters Bethany Evans (third) and Alicia Evans (lead) finished fourth at the 21-team Canadian U18 girls and boys curling championships in Saskatoon.

Ontario's Katrina Frian scored one with the hammer in an extra end to beat Arndt 6-5 in the bronze-medal match Saturday, Feb. 22.

After losing their first two games on the Prairies, the Arndt foursome rattled off five straight wins to earn a spot in the championship semifinals, where they lost 10-2 to eventual silver-medalist Abby Desormeaux of Alberta. Desormeaux fell 8-7 to Cassidy Blades of Nova Scotia in the gold-medal match.

Jensen won Sportsmanship Spirit Award for her pool, selected by the pool's other players.

The Megan Rempel rink of Kelowna-Penticton finished with a 2-5 record.

Kelowna's Owen Jaeger went 3-4 on the boy's side.

The gold medal was won by Zach Atherton, giving Nova Scotia a sweep of the Canadian titles. Atherton defeated Tyler MacTavish of Ontario 7-1 in the final.

Quebec91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s Zachary Janidlo knocked off Alberta91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s Peter Hlushak to claim the third-place finish. 

SCOTTIES TOURNAMENT OF HEARTS

Kamloops' Corryn Brown made the playoffs at the Canadian women's curling finals in Thunder Bay, but were eliminated in their first playoff game by Christina Black of Nova Scotia, 10-5.

Brown's rink went 6-2 in the round-robin to qualify for the playoffs.

The team is coached by Vernon's Jim Cotter.
