The Kelowna Chiefs came out on top in a back-and-forth came against the Creston Valley Thunder Cats on Saturday (Jan. 26) at Rutland Arena.
Creston Valley took a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a goal by Kieran Strauss (4). Murphy Jensen answered for the Chiefs 10 minutes later with his fourth of the season. Kelowna took a 2-1 a few minutes after that when Own Ivanov (11) found the back of the net. Creston Valley's Taylor Schmideder (5) tied it 2-2 with 30 seconds left in the period. There was just one goal in the second frame. Liam Munro scored his 17th of the seaon to give the Thunder Cats a 3-2 lead.
With less than five minutes left in the third period, the Chiefs' Aiden Morcom (14) tied the game 3-3. However, Chase Bambrick (1) put Creston Valley back in front at 4-3 just a minute later on the powerplay.
Just when it looked like Creston Valley would escape with the win, the Chiefs pulled goaltender Michael Makowsky for the extra attacker and Owen Miller (14) scored to tie the game at four, with four seconds left on the clock. Sam Dal Cin (2) scored the winner three minutes into the first overtime for the 5-4 victory.
The Chiefs outshot Creston Valley 37-33 and went 0-for-3 on the powerplay. Kelowna beat the KIJHL leading Princeton Posse 4-2 on Friday (Jan. 25).
Kelowna is in Nelson to play the Leafs on Jan. 31, and Castlegar to play the Rebels on Feb. 1.
