Curling championships coming to a close in Kelowna: Sports weekend preview

The Rockets, Warriors, and Chiefs also in action while UBCO basketball begins

Champions will be crowded and basketball season starts in Kelowna this weekend.

Pan Continental Curling

Championships will be crowned at the Kelowna Curling Club this weekend as the Pan Continental Curling Championships come to a close.

The Canadian men91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s team takes on Team USA in the semi-finals on Friday morning. If Canada wins, they will advance to the finals, which take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The other semi-final is Korea vs. Japan.

On the women91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s side, Team Canada lost in the semi-finals on Thursday night. They are playing against Team USA for bronze, taking place on Friday at 2 p.m.

The women91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s final between Korea and Japan is taking place on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Kelowna Rockets

The Kelowna Rockets are back on home ice this weekend, looking to get back into the win column.

After losing twice on the road last weekend, the Rockets welcome the Victoria Royals on Friday night and the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday.

Going into the weekend, the Rockets sit second in the B.C. Division and sixth in the Western Conference with a 7-6-1 record. Victoria sits right behind them with a 7-6-0 record while Red Deer is 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 5-7-0-1 record.

This season against Victoria, the Rockets have lost 9-7 and won 6-3.

Both games are at Prospera Place, starting at 7:05 p.m.

West Kelowna Warriors

It91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s a two-game weekend for the Warriors, who start on the road but finish at home.

On Friday night, the team will take the Okanagan Connector down to Merritt to face off against the Centennials. In the one match-up so far this season, the Warriors won 6-4. Friday91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s game starts at 7 p.m. at Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

The next night, the Warriors are back home to take on the Cranbrook Bucks on Ladies night at Royal LePage Place. Throughout the night, wine will be half-priced and only Shania Twain and Taylor Swift music will be played throughout the night.

Saturday night91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s puck drop is at 7 p.m.

Going into the weekend, the Warriors are third in the Interior Conference with a 9-3-1 record. Merritt is sixth with a 5-7-1-1 record while Cranbrook is last with a record of 3-10-1.

Kelowna Chiefs

The Chiefs are going through the mountain range for three games against the Eddie Mountain Division this weekend.

The team will play on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night against the Kimberley Dynamiters (8-4-0-0), Fernie Ghostriders (8-4-0-0), and Creston Valley Thunder Cats (6-4-1-1).

Kelowna is coming off a 9-3 win over Spokane last weekend. Despite their 4-7-2-0 record, they sit second in the Bill Ohlhausen Division.

Friday and Saturday91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s puck drop is at 6 p.m. Pacific time while Sundays are at 2:30 Pacific.

UBCO Heat

The basketball season tips off for the UBC Okanagan Heat this weekend, as both the men91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s and women91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s teams welcome the University of Winnipeg to town.

On Friday, the men play at 5 p.m., followed by the women at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the games are an hour earlier, at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. All games are taking place at The Furnace - UBCO Gymnasium.

The university91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s volleyball teams are also in action down in the Lower Mainland, taking on the Trinity Western Spartans.
