As many of you may know, O91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™Keefe Ranch, a truly one-of-a-kind historic site in the North Okanagan, is facing a dire financial situation.
The City of Vernon has recently decided to uphold its contract lease agreement (which was penned nearly 30 years ago) offering only $10,000 in funding next year.
This meagre amount falls drastically short of what is needed to keep the ranch operational, especially considering rising costs due to inflation.
Without more substantial support, this invaluable piece of our province's history may soon be left to decay.
O91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™Keefe Ranch is much more than a collection of old buildings.
It serves as a vibrant learning hub for local school children, offering hands-on experiences that connect students with the rich history of ranching and Indigenous life in the Okanagan.
It91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s also a beloved tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who are eager to experience a piece of B.C.91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s ranching history.
In fact, the North Okanagan Model Railroaders Club, which operates out of the ranch, welcomed over 400 international visitors this year alone.
But the ranch is more than a historical or tourist site.
It has become a haven in times of crisis, opening its doors to provide refuge to animals and their owners during wildfires and floods.
This role in our community underscores the ranch's importance, not just as a historical landmark, but as a vital part of the region's social fabric.
Despite all their efforts, including hosting events to raise funds, the ranch cannot do it alone.
The city91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s insufficient support threatens to dismantle an institution that has stood as a living reminder of our region91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s past for nearly 160 years.
It91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s time for the community to rally behind O91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™Keefe Ranch.
I urge neighbouring municipalities, various organizations and residents of Vernon and the wider Okanagan to support the ranch however they can.
Whether through donations, visiting the ranch, or voicing your concerns to city council, your support is crucial to preserving this unique and irreplaceable piece of B.C.91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s history.
Let91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s not let our heritage slip away due to inaction.
Sincerely,
Caitlin Clow
