Gordon passed away peacefully January 22 at 101 years, at the Pine Grove Care Home in Kamloops.
Born in Vernon BC, Nov 10, 1920 to Walter Barrington (Barry) and Cecilia Piers, he is predeceased by two brothers, one sister. Moved to Salmon Arm from 1929 to 1932 and then to Haney (Maple Ridge). MacLean School to grade 11.
Worked weekends at Brown Bros. nursery. Quit school and "hoboed" across Canada. Worked at several places at a young age; Hammond Cedar Mill, ranch hand and sawmill logging in Celista, BC.
Volunteered in RCAF in 1940. Served overseas, 1941 -1945. Aircrew with service in India, Ceylon, and Burma. Out as Warrant Officer 1. 5 medals including the Burma Star.
Ranched in the Kamloops area then joined the BC Provincial Police, Prince Rupert and Grand Forks.
Resigned and became a Canadian Corps of Commissioners and Collection Agent, West Canadian Adjustment Bureau, Prince Rupert Post office. Long Haul driver Lindsey's Cartage & Storage, Prince Rupert.
Married Sally Chisholm 1946 and son James Walter Piers joined the family in 1947. Moved to Chilliwack 1952. Driver for Chilliwack Cartage. Joined Canada Customs in 1965. While in Chilliwack - Cub Master (assistant), Chilliwack Fish and Game (Treasurer), Chilliwack Search & Rescue (Capt. & Search Master), Firearms instructor. Taught night classes, fly tying. Canadian Legion, membership, entertainment and finance committees.
Divorced 1968. Married Helen Street (nee Andreychuk), Oct 1968. Blended family, Teresa, (deceased), Yvonne (deceased), and son Alex. Entered Canada Customs in Chilliwack worked at Pacific Highway and Douglas Crossing for 15 years. Promoted to Supervisor (O.I.C), Roosville. After 10 years retired. Moved to Wasa, BC. (8yrs), Vernon (2yrs), then Peachland in 1991.
Survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Helen, and sons James and David, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Pine Grove Care Home for their care and compassion during this time of loss.
Private "Celebration of Life" to be held in the spring.
