Police are again urging residents to remove valuables from vehicles before locking them at night. 

In recent weeks, Salmon Arm RCMP noted there has been a rash of theft from vehicles, generally occurring overnight and to vehicles left unlocked. These incidents have been occurring throughout the community. 

This trend continued into the beginning of October. On Oct. 4, police received a report from a man on 15th Avenue SE who said sometime over the previous night someone had entered his vehicle and stole a gas card and about $25 in change. 

Police said the car's interior light was left on and it was unclear if the vehicle was left unlocked, though there was no reported damage. 

On Oct. 10, police received a report from a woman on 12th Street SE who said her video surveillance system, at 4:30 a.m., had captured an unknown man attempting to open her car door.

"No entry was made into the vehicle as the doors were locked, and there was no damage to the vehicle," said Const. Andrew Hodges in a media release. 

Nothing was stolen from the vehicle. Police viewed the footage but were unable to identify the man.

On the same date, a woman in the 200 block of Highway 1 reported an unknown suspect had stolen a handheld radio from her unlocked vehicle sometime overnight. 

Hodges said there was no video footage and police have no suspects.

"The woman was advised to not keep anything of value in her vehicle, and to lock her vehicle at all times," said Hodges, who offered similar advice to the community. 

" Police recommend having a 9 p.m. routine that includes removing all keys, door openers, cash and valuables from vehicles," said Hodges. "Where possible, parking your vehicle in a secure area like garage is recommended, or a well-lit area."
