The City of Salmon Arm is launching its new Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) just over a month after formally withdrawing from Shuswap Tourism.
Announced in a Feb. 12 media release, the new DMO will be run in partnership with the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society's (SAEDS) Municipal and Regional District Tax Program (MRDT) to establish Salmon Arm as a premier, year-round destination by implementing strategies to promote the city to domestic and international visitors.
"This local DMO model allows us to showcase the best of our city 91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ“ from breathtaking natural beauty to rich cultural experiences," Mayor Alan Harrison said in the release. "It's an exciting opportunity to shine a light on Salmon Arm and ensure our guests enjoy a remarkable experience."
The city announced last year it would be withdrawing from Shuswap Tourism after a proposed 20.61 per cent budget increase for the regional service was presented at a Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) board meeting. The increase meant Salmon Arm, which paid 40 per cent of the service's budget, would have been on the hook for an additional $80,241. As such, city council voted to withdraw from the service, effective Jan. 1.
The new DMO will work together with others from across the region to foster strategic partnerships, launch innovative marketing campaigns and create unforgettable visitor experiences. Building on the city's successful Visitor Services Function and the MRDT program, the DMO pilot project opens opportunities for a unique collaboration. Taking a partnership approach will enhance efficiency and create more of a comprehensive strategy for attracting tourists, talent and investment.
"Tourism is a priority sector within Salmon Arm's economy. SAEDS is pleased to collaborate on this new chapter focused on advancing Salmon Arm's visitor economy," chairperson Bill Laird added. "We're confident this project will elevate the city's profile, create new opportunities for businesses, and grow our tourism economy."
The city will provide updates on initiative as it moves forward, including a public launch planned for early summer.
