A name has been chosen for the new Parkdale Place Housing Society property in Summerland.
The naming was done through a contest, calling on Summerland residents and residents of the housing society to help name the new building. A $500 prize was offered for the winning name.
Charmaine Kramer, chief executive officer of the housing society, announced the name after more than 200 entries were considered.
The winning name is Dickson Manor. The prize will be split between Kyle Gabelhei of Summerland and Debbie Schneider of Agur Lake Camp Society, who both submitted the winning entry.
Other entries included the Dickson name, but the entries from Gabelhei and Schneider matched exactly.
The name holds historical value.
The new facility will be constructed at the site of the former Legion Village on Dickson Avenue.
The name also recognizes the Dickson family. David Dickson was a former orchard owner and a water foreman in the community. His daughter, Margaret Caldwell, played a role in creating Legion Village.
The new building will have a distinctive red architectural frame around the main entrance and will include red in its logo. This is in recognition of the Summerland Legion and Legion Village.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in the summer.
The facility, once completed, will have 81 affordable care units for seniors, and will also include a primary care medical centre on the main floor.
The Legion Village, formerly on the site, was opened in the spring of 1971 and consisted of 24 units, with 16 single units and eight double units. That facility has been demolished in advance of the construction of the new seniors facility.
