Kelowna city council has approved a zoning update allowing secondary suites in townhomes in multi-family and urban centre zones (MF2, UC1-5).
It aligns with other zones that already permit such suites, such as the MF1 infill and MF4 transit-oriented areas. Secondary suites are not allowed in stacked townhomes or apartment buildings where units are above and below each other.
At Monday91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s (Feb. 10), staff told council these suites can help with mortgage payments and offer flexible housing options, like space for multi-generational families.
They cannot be sold individually and must provide a minimum of one parking stall per unit, similar to other zones in the city. The update aligns with Kelowna's Housing Action Plan, which aims to expand rental housing and provide mortgage helpers.
